Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for recognizing Pakistan’s role in counterterrorism efforts in Afghanistan. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a close partnership with the United States for regional peace and stability.
Trump, in his address to Congress on Tuesday, extended a “special” thanks to Pakistan’s government for assisting in the arrest of the prime suspect behind an attack on a U.S. military base during the Afghanistan withdrawal.
Following Trump’s statement, FBI Director Kashyap Patel announced on social media platform X that the FBI, along with the Department of Justice and the CIA, had brought one of the masterminds of the Abbey Gate attack to the United States.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Trump’s acknowledgment came in light of Pakistan’s role in the arrest of Sharifullah, an operational commander of the so-called Islamic State, during an operation in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region. The statement clarified that Sharifullah was a wanted terrorist.
Prime Minister Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to combating terrorism and stated that Pakistan does not support militant groups using its territory as a safe haven for attacks against other countries.
"We remain steadfast in our resolve to tackle the menace of terrorism," he added.
